7:24From there he set out and went away to the region of Tyre. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know he was there. Yet he could not escape notice,
7:25but a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit immediately heard about him, and she came and bowed down at his feet.
7:26Now the woman was a gentile, of Syrophoenician origin. She begged him to cast the demon out of her daughter.
7:27He said to her, “Let the children be fed first, for it is not fair to take the children’s food and throw it to the dogs.”
7:28But she answered him, “Sir, even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.”
7:29Then he said to her, “For saying that, you may go–the demon has left your daughter.”
7:30And when she went home, she found the child lying on the bed and the demon gone.
7:31Then he returned from the region of Tyre and went by way of Sidon toward the Sea of Galilee, in the region of the Decapolis.
7:32They brought to him a deaf man who had an impediment in his speech, and they begged him to lay his hand on him.
7:33He took him aside in private, away from the crowd, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spat and touched his tongue.
7:34Then looking up to heaven, he sighed and said to him, “Ephphatha,” that is, “Be opened.”
7:35And his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly.
7:36Then Jesus ordered them to tell no one, but the more he ordered them, the more zealously they proclaimed it.
7:37They were astounded beyond measure, saying, “He has done everything well; he even makes the deaf to hear and the mute to speak.”
Sermon
Mark 7:31-37
A funny story is told about a football stadium.
After taking the opening kick- off,
the home team went into a huddle as usual
to get the formation from the quarterback
and to encourage one another.
The team did not break out of the huddle
to move into action!
Soon the red flag was dropped,
and the referee gave a penalty for delay of game.
The team still did not leave the huddle!
They seemed to be talking among themselves
and encouraging one another,
but it appeared they had forgotten that the object of the game
is to carry the ball across the goal.
But the team kept talking in the huddle
and patting each other on the back.

Well, here we are this Sunday
in the huddle again.
AND THAT’S IMPORTANT
.
In the huddle of Christian worship
is where we receive encouragement and instruction.
But really it is meeting with Christ, God,
Our quarterback….
At church .
That is why we huddle here,
The huddle is important.
BUT THE HUDDLE IS NOT THE GAME.
The game is how we live in the world.
The game is our help to Christ,
Our quarterback.

In today’s scripture:
Someone brought to Jesus
a man who was deaf and had a speech impediment
and asked Jesus
to lay his hand upon him and heal him.
And TAKING HIM ASIDE FROM THE MULTITUDE PRIVATELY,
Mark tells us,
Jesus put his fingers into the man’s ears,
and he spat and touched his tongue;
and looking up to heaven, he sighed,
and said to him,
“Be opened.”
And the man’s ears were opened,
his tongue was released,
and he spoke plainly.
Notice those words,
“And taking him aside from the multitude privately . . .”
There were no newspaper ads saying,
“Come, expecting a miracle . . .”
Jesus wasn’t interested in becoming a celebrity.
In fact, after Jesus healed this man,
“HE CHARGED THEM TO TELL NO ONE.”
What’s is with Jesus?
Doesn’t he understand public relations?
Doesn’t he understand advertising?
Press agents and other publicity people
are under constant pressure
to invent ways to get their clients
noticed by the public.
Didn’t Jesus want to get his message out to the world?
Of course, he did.
Just before he left his disciples,
he instructed them to take the Gospel message
to the ends of the earth.
Jesus wants to get the message out.
That is why he came into the world.
But there are a couple things
about getting the message out
that we need to see.
FIRST OF ALL,
AUTHENTIC CHRISTIAN FAITH SELLS ITSELF.
Christian faith does not require hype.
Did you know that on an old law book there is a law
it is against the law for a merchant to drag or pull a person
from the street for the purpose of making a sale?
Just so,
We do not need to put on the hard sell
when it comes to Christian faith.
We don’t need gimmicks to bring people to Christ.
Jesus is enough,

Notice what happens in this story from Mark’s Gospel.
Jesus charged them to tell no one;
but the more he charged them,
the more zealously they proclaimed it.
The truth of the matter is that Christ
could not be hidden.
When you find people who live like he lived,
others are going to notice.

When you have people living out their faith like that,
the Gospel doesn’t need any hype.
The Gospel message attracts itself.
That brings us to the second thing we need to see:
AUTHENTIC CHRISTIAN LIVES
ARE THE BEST ADVERTISING FOR OUR FAITH.
Other forms of advertising faith can be confusing.
For instance
There is nothing wrong with church bumper stickers.
But Once you put a religious bumper sticker on,
though,
make sure you drive in a Christ-like way.
Otherwise it’s confusing.

What is not confusing
is when we live our lives
with the integrity,
love
and self-giving of Jesus Christ.
We don’t have to be loud about it.
All we need is to be consistent.

In the early 1800s England underwent a revolution.
It was not violent like the one that happened
during the same era in France.
The revolution in England
ushered in a period during which
there was an explosion of institutions
committed to the education
and assistance of the poor.
Behind the revolution was a spiritual renewal
in which many men and women
came to understand what
it meant to follow Christ.
One little-known but significant factor
in this revolution was the role of England’s nannies,
the women (usually from the poorer families)
who were hired by the upper classes
to care for children.
Many of these nannies were followers of Christ,
and they taught the children about Jesus.
They also influenced the parents.
Laws were passed in Parliament,
organizations were founded
that made a great difference
in the English way of life.
Society became more tolerant
more supportive of the poor and the downcast.
And not a little of it can be attributed to the nannies
who worked behind the scenes
doing what they knew Christ had called them to do.
Was that revolution the product
of lots of noisy hype?
No, just quiet and sincere Christian living.

Right now there is a call for the kindness revolution.
Hugh Mackay has written the book.
He says:
Revolutions never start at the top.
If we dare to dream of a more loving world –
kinder,
more compassionate,
more cooperative,
more respectful,
more inclusive,
more egalitarian,
there’s only one way to start turning that dream into a reality:
each of us must live as if this is already that world.
Enough people of good will
Helping each other
will make it so.
One good turn deserves another.

That is what Christ desires out of us.
To live our lives as his representatives in the world.
So, this Sunday
it’s nearing time when we break huddle
head back out on the playing field.
Let the game begin!
